well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's monday, december 17th. today, two of the young victims in friday's deadly school shooting in newtown, connecticut will be laid to rest. funeral services are planned for 6-year-old noah pozner and jack pinto. jack was a big fan of new york giants' star victor cruz and yesterday during the giants' game cruz wore jack's name on his uniform in his honor. noah is the youngest victim. he had just turned 6 a couple of weeks ago. several other funerals are planned throughout the week. just moments ago, police in newtown held a press conference about the newest developments in the case. >> the plan is to try to resume normalcy for school classes tomorrow except for those members at the sandy hook school. they will be excused, of course, until further notice. >> we'll have more on the

future of sandy hook, the school itself in a few minutes. police say they still have work in their investigation. right now, they are interviewing witnesses in hopes of learning more about the horrifying massacre. the shooting, as you can imagine, is affecting parents and kids all over the country, including right here in the bay area. ktvu's tara moriarty is live in san francisco with more on how students will honor the victims in newtown -- newtown, today. >> reporter: well, they plan to stand in solidarity with the students by wearing their school colors. behind me here, you can see there is a fence up around this school. that, of course, is gonna be the topic of discussion among a lot of school administrators. many schools have fences designed to keep intruders out. but if they get in, it's questionable how far they can get. california's superintendent expects more discussions about this. he's alerted all 1100 public

school districts to reskew safety plans -- review safety plans. >> you minimize the risk as best you can. we can't live in fear and have every school be a closed fortress of some kind. it's a place of learning. >> reporter: some parents say sandy hook elementary had a locked door through the school but a gunman shot his way through it. state legislators say this is vulnerable. >> it's not gonna stop somebody if that's their intention. they obviously think about it and then go do it. >> reporter: as important as security, the superintendent says is how awareness and training have saved lives in connecticut. after the columbine killings in colorado, schools started to do drills. officials say you can't expect those to increase. hopefully, we'll get a chance to talk to parents and school officials to tell you what they make of all of this.

live from san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:04. well, yesterday, president obama and more than 2,000 people gathered to honor the victims and the first responders. [ applause ] >> that was a standing ovation for law enforcement. you see them walking toward the stage. they were able to help get dozens of children safely out of the school and then president obama read aloud the names of the 20 children killed and promises to do what he can to prevent this from happening again. >> as a community, in the faith of indescribable violence, in the face of unconscionable evil, you've looked out for each other. >> now, outside the school, there was this -- there are memorials that include candles and teddy bears.

some of them left by people who have traveled miles to honor those victims. today, oakland police plan to show the hundreds of guns turned in during a bi-back program. the department hosted one of its most -- buy-pack program. the department hosted one of its most successful ones yet. they teamed up to offer $200 per gun, no questions asked. they estimated they helped get 600 guns off the streets. the school massacre in connecticut has re-ignited the gun control debate. coming up at 7:15, the new legislation, dianne feinstein says she is will introduce next month. new this morning, a home invasion just hours ago in san francisco. now the police are busy searching for the robbers. ktvu's brian flores is joining us live in the sunset district with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're live here at the 1600

block of sloat boulevard. still a very active scene here as several san francisco police officers are here investigating that home-invasion robbery that happened earlier this morning. we just got done talking with the resident of the house here. according to san francisco police and the resident we talked to, this robbery happened at around 2:00, 3:00 this morning. from what we understand, the father was watching tv in the home while his wife was getting ready for work when three masked robbers entered the home through a side window. the residents said they were armed and tied up with electrical tape. they say the men were there for about an hour as they ransacked the home. they took about $500 in cash along with purses and other belongings. the resident said he told the robbers he didn't have anything else after then they left. the family was able to escape and finally called police about an hour later.

i asked if he was injured. he said he and his family are okay but understandably shaken up. still sketchy on who police are looking for this morning. all we understand, there were three masked men and presumably they were armed. as soon as we have that detail, we'll pass that along. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. overnight in san francisco, a strange rescue by firefighters, a man was stuck inside of a chimney. this all happened around 11:30 last night at the police sid yolights -- presidio heights apartments on clay street. firefighters removed bricks from that chimney to get the man out. >> i'm not sure how he entered into the fireplace. we'll find that upon more investigation. >> they tell us the man right there was rushed to a hospital. we have no other information yet about his condition. 7:07. a north bay highway remains shut down due to downed power

lines. this is highway 121 in napa. an overnight accident shut down all lanes in both directions near stone crest drive. crews had hoped to reopen the road just a few moments ago by 7:00. however, at this time, there's no estimate for when the road will reopen. so expect delays if you need to drive in that area. it is still snowing in the sierra and there's a winter storm warning through tonight. we have live pictures now of interstate 80 at the truckee scales where it snowed all night. you can see a truck going through that area right now. up to 16 new inches of new snow is expected to fall. the mountains already have a pretty big snowpack which is welcomed news for many ski resorts that struggled after a lack of snow last year. remember, you can always check the weather where you live, including a look at the live radar, just go to ktvu.com and click on the weather tab. 7:08. you need an umbrella and you need to drive carefully. the roads are wet.

pattern on friday and then rain moves in for the weekend. 7:11. something is happening now. we're following developing news from connecticut. schools in ridgefield, connecticut have been put on lockdown. there are reports of a suspicious person at a nearby train station. now, ridgefield is about 20 miles away from newtown. authorities are searching the area. there is a report of a man with possibly a rifle slung over his back. again, this is information just coming in right now. this happens just three days after the connecticut school shooting in sandy hook. we're following the details. we'll pring this this to you -- we'll bring this to you as soon pass we have information. >> i grew up in ridgefield. that's my hometown. there is a lot of woods in that area and hunters. we would have hunters sometimes in our neighborhood. it's not that unusual to see that. but obviously because of what happened at sook, it would be extremely -- at sandy hook it

rifle and at least two handguns, authorities say he also had a shot gun in his car. some of those victims were shot as many as 11 times. 7:16. the connecticut shooting has led to renewed calls for gun control on capitol hill. california senator kye ann feinstein is -- dianne feinstein is leading the way. our report has more. >> reporter: senator feinstein says she will be reintroducing legislation to ban assault weapons. vancouvers confirm the shooter in friday's attack used an assault rifle. senator feinstein was a big player in a national ban on assault weapons that went into effect in 1994 but it -- but it expired in 2004. since then, democrats have been rushing -- pushing to reinstate the ban with you with no luck. but with friday's deadly school

shooting -- but with no luck. but with friday's deadly school shooting -- >> we can't tolerate this anymore. these tragedies must end. we must change. >> reporter: some republicans who didn't support that ban are now changing their tune. more on that in my next update. back to you. >> thank you. 7:17. once again, we want to bring you updated on some developing news that we're following from connecticut. right now, all schools in the town of ridgefield, connecticut have been put on lockdown because of reports of a suspicious person. ridgefield is 20 miles south of newtown. authorities are searching the area after a report of a man at the branchfield train station possibly with a rifle slung over his back. i happened to go to that elementary school in connecticut a long time ago but the train station is quite busy. it takes commuters down to the

metro nort line in new york city. this is all coming three days after the sandy hook shooting in newtown, connecticut. we'll continue to stay son top of this story -- stay on top of this story for you. a neighboring town, monroe, seven miles away, offered up an unused school to the more than 400 sandy hook students. officials say the school will be head are -- school will be ready by wednesday but it's not clear when classes will resume for sandy hook students. they are not back at school today. as for the sandy hook school building, one police official says he doubts students will ever attend that school again. 7:18. there are some signs of progress in the fiscal cliff debate. house speaker john boehner now willing to accept a tax hike on those people who make more than a million dollars a year.

that's less than what president obama wants. he wants to raise the taxes on those who make $250,000 a year. boehner is angering some of those in his party who are against this. others say we need to support him. >> he's our speaker and leader. we're never gonna get the perfect deal. i'm confident john will get the best deal we can consistent with the principles. >> boehner offering to raise taxes includes cutting an unspecified rise in the eligibility age raise for medicare. while this debate continues for tax cuts scheduled to take place next year, big tax cuts have already started for millions of families and businesses this year. more than 70 tax breaks expired at the end of 2011. if congress does not extend

them retroactive, h & r block says a typical middle-class family would phase a -- would phase a $4,000 tax hike when they file their 2012 returns. and businesses could enjoy dozens of tax breaks they've enjoyed for years. later today, an independent report goes to the state department about the attack in libya. secretary of state, hillary clinton ordered the investigation by an advisory review board. it's said to be the most detailed explanation yet about the attack that killed u.s. ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. congress will be briefed on that report on wednesday. meanwhile, secretary of state clinton continues to recover at her home after she passed out at her home while recovering from the flu. she suffered a concussion. she was expected to testify on thursday but that was canceled.

the buzz is growing over who will replace hillary clinton. we're hearing that president obama may nominate john kerry. that's after susan rice withdrew her name from consideration. it's expected that kerry's nomination would be easily approved by his fellow senators. if nominated, kerry, who is 69 and once ran for president, would replace hillary clinton who plans to step down early next year. we've been saying it all morning. you need an umbrella. the rain keeps calling in parts of the bay area. look out the window live. the duchess of cambridge makes her first appearance after being treated for morning sickness. victims of the connecticut shooting on friday. last night, president obama and the governor of connecticut were among the speakers at a very emotional vigil. now the people are preparing to bury the victims. two funerals are scheduled today. back here in the bay area, a church is planning an interfaith service tonight to reflect on what happened last week. the service will be at 7:00 tonight at first presbyterian church of burlingame. that's at 1500 easton drive. local religious leaders and public school trustees will be there. they will include prayers, readings and expressions of remembrance and hope. about an hour ago, police in newtown, held this news conference with the latest information about that deadly shooting on friday. they just announced that classes at schools in newtown will resume tomorrow with the exception of sandy hook elementary. mup at 7:37. we'll get -- coming up at 7:37, we'll get a live report from newtown, what the community is about to do to honor two young

victims. happening now -- workers and volunteers are getting ready to give free holiday meals to families in need. starting at 9:00, sacred heart community service in san jose will begin to hand out food for the holidays. the organization fed a record number of families for thanksgiving and hope to do the same this week. >> we're expecting around 3,200 families that we've signed up. we hope to not turn anyone away that comes in. we want to make sure that everybody has a christmas meal this year. >> the food give away will continue tomorrow and next week. next week, workers plan to give out toys. but they don't have enough right now. if you would like to donate, go to ktvu.com and look for sacred heart under the web links. later this morning, the holiday cheer will be spread to bay area children in need by giving them a chance to shop until they drop. ktvu's allie rasmus is live where an olympic gold medalist among others will be taking

[ cheers ] >> reporter: it was just ten minutes ago when they were off. they raised $50,000 to buy toys for kids in need. but the organization focuses on shopping for older kids, ages 5 to 17. sometimes those toys get expensive. but the organizer says those

all schools, closed today. but normal, schools in newtown, connecticut will reopen except for sandy hook elementary school. those students are still grieving after 20 of their classmates as well as six edge kateers from their school were shot and killed on friday. the nation continues to mourn the lives lost in the connecticut school shooting. today, the first funerals will be held for two sandy hook students. 6-year-old jack pinto and 6- year-old noah pozner. on sunday more than 2,000 people came out for a memorial service to remember the 26 lives cut short after authorities say 20-year-old adam lanza shot his way into sandy hook elementary and opened fire. >> we offer you our tears and our pain, our anger, and our sorrow. >> reporter: president obama traveled to newtown, where he met with the families of the victims and spoke at the

service. >> whatever portion of sadness that we can share with you to ease this heavy load, we will gladly bear it. >> reporter: the president praised the community for pulling together and says more needs to be done to protect our children. >> these tragedies must end. and to end them, we must change. >> reporter: right, and tori, just a short time ago, we heard from state police. they say this investigation is still very much underway. they are still interviewing many witnesses. they are still analyzes the weapons found at the -- analyzing the weapons found at the crime scene and they say that sandy hook elementary will remain closed as a crime scene and that could be the situation for months to come. back to you. >> thank you. a report of a suspicious person led to a lockdown of all schools in the town of ridgefield, connecticut this

morning. someone called 911 to report a man possibly with a rifle walking near a train station and that station is just about five minutes away from an elementary school. police interviewed a man near the station but did not take him no custody. schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution and police are stationed at all school backyard buildings -- at all school buildings. at least two afghan workers were killed and 5 more wounded in a suicide attack overnight outside of a military contractor in afghanistan. the taliban has claimed responsible for a contract -- responsibility for a contract. that's a contract that builds barracks for military bases.

at least 17 people were killed and dozens more wounded in an explosion in northwest pakistan today. no one has claimed responsibility for the car bombing outside of a government office in pakistan's northwest tribal region but the area is known -- is known to house several -- is known to house several groups. the taliban has claimed responsibility for a rocket and car bomb attack saturday at the international airport in peshawar that killed at least 15 people. 7:41. coming up -- what a new report on economic growth predicts for the new year. from the 38-yard line, it go to the air. go a little bit low. >> and the 49ers are in the playoffs. how they held off the patriots who tried to make a furious comeback in new england. 4>ánaoñú]

stocks are hiring -- higher this morning thanks to encouraging news on the fiscal cliff talks. apple's stock is down over 1%. it was downgraded to neutral by citigroup. the stock was over $700 in september. right now it's trading for 504. a new survey shows business economists expect u.s. growth to continue at its current slow rate through next year. this morning, the national

association for business economics latest survey forecasts a 2.1% rate of growth through 2013. that's down 1/10% from this year. but it also expects the federal deficit to shrinking to $9 billion and it forecasts the housing recovery will continue and job creation will increase. apple reports a apple says they had a best rollout over for an iphone in china and this is the first time that apple has given numbers for the iphones. cisco has hired barkley's bank to sell its home router unit, according to bloomberg. cisco acquired the business for $500 billion.

welcome back to "mornings on 2." the funerals start today in newtown, connecticut and two of the victims will be laid to rest. the funerals are planned for 6- year-old noah pozner and jack pin co. now, jack was a pig fan of giants' star victor cruz. yesterday, during the giant' game, cruz wore his name on his un foam in his honor. noah was the youngest victim. he just turned 6. about an hour ago, police in newtown, held a news conference about the latest developments in the case. >> the plan is to try to resume normalcy for school classes tomorrow except for those members at the sandy hook

school. they will be excused, of course, until further notice. >> police say they have a lot of work to do in their investigation. right now they are questioning witnesses and continues to search for evidence. the connecticut shooting has made bay area parents, as you can imagine, fear for their own children's safety. tara moriarty is live in san francisco to tell us how school officials are taking precautions to make sure the children are safe. tara? >> reporter: we're here at the school and the gates are locked. there are a lot of fences. there's signs saying you need to check in. over here at the front core, you -- the front door, you can see there's -- obey all of this -- you can see there's signs. california's superintendent expects new talks about metal detectors as well as cal raw

are memorials that include candles and teddy bears left by people. some have traveled for miles to honor victims. 8:03. well, many here in the bay area are getting raid of -- rid of their guns after that tragedy in connecticut. today, oakland police will display the 600 guns turned in during a buyback program. they teamed up to pay $200 per gun. several people said turning in their guns felt like the right thing to do. the school massacre in connecticut has re-ignited the gun control debate. coming up, the new legislation that california senator dianne feinstein will introduce next month. police are searching for armed robbers who knocked off a gas station in walnut creek. it happened around 5:30 this morning at the chevron on north main street and parkside drive. police say two men demanded

money from the clerk. one of them had a gun. the suspects are described as after am in the mid-20s about 5'10", one of them had long, black braided hair, win build. police are searching for home-invasion robbers who tied up and robbed people in the sunset district -- in a sunset district home in san francisco. brian flores is there now with how it -- with how this happen and how the victims are doing. >> reporter: we're live here on the 1600 block of sloat boulevard. we've been here since 5:00 this morning. still a very active scene at this home where a home invasion robbery happened in the early part of this morning. we talked with a resident of the house here. we presume he's the homeowner. we talked to him about an hour ago. he's the father with two adult kids. he also lives here with his wife and grandmother. according to san francisco police and the resident, this robbery happened at around 2:00 or 3:00 this morning. from what we understand, the

father was watching tv in the home while his wife was getting ready for work, when three masked robbers entered the home through a side window. that's according to san francisco police. the resident said they were armed and told the family to get on the floor while the robbers tied them up with electrical tape. resident says they were there for close to an hour as they ransacked the home. they took about $500 in cash along with purses, jewelry and other belongings. the resident said he didn't have anything else and left. he called police about an hour later. i asked if he or his family was injure. he said they are okay but -- injured. he said they are okay but shaken up. still unclear of a description, ear than they were masked and armed -- other than they were masked and armed. as soon as we have that, we'll bring it to you. back to you. thank you. a man was rescued after

getting stuck in a chimney. it happened around 11:30 last night on presidio apartments on clay street. firefighters had to use special equipment and use bricks to get the machine out. >> i'm not sure how he entered into the fireplace. we're find out that upon -- we'll find out that upon further investigation. >> no information about his condition has been released. any minute now, a highway in napa closed during to -- due to downed power lines is due to reopen. this is known as -- known as the silver -- as the silverado trail. crews say they should be able to reopen that road very soon. we'll be watching and, of course, sal will have the details when the information comes in. >> yeah. so in addition to the north bay, sal is also keeping an eye on the east bay. it's a mess. >> it is.

heavily armed, fired hundreds of rounds of ammunition and died with hundreds of rounds that were unused. he killed himself as he heard police closing in outside a classroom. along with having an assault rifle and at least two handgun. authorities say he also had a shot gun in his car. all of the weapons were edged and registered -- were owned and registered by his father. she was at home in her pajamas when killed. some of the victims in the school were shot as many as 11 times. 8:15. well, california senator dianne feinstein is on a new mission after friday's shotting tragedy in connecticut. as kayla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom the senator is leading a push to ban assault weapons. >> reporter: senator feinstein pushed for the last ban in 1994. now she says she will introduce

the been or legislation on a ban, rather, in the coming weeks. the authorities confirm the shooter had an assault riffle. now feinstein and other lawmakers want to reinstitute a ban that expired eight years ago. one democrat that's been against the ban is a senator. he says it's time to move beyond rhetoric on gun control. he says everybody needs to be on the table in discussion on this. and president obama indicated last night gun law changes are needed. >> no single law, no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. but that can't be an excuse for an action. >> reporter: much debate is expected in the coming weeks, including large ammunition clips an how mental health can play a role in these gun control laws. live in washington, back to

you. right now, authorities in coecticut are working now to make sure the students who survived that tragedy will have a school to go to. a neighboring town seven miles away, offered an unused school to more than the 400 sandy hook students. officials say the school will be ready -- will be ready by wednesday. it's not clear when the classes will resume for the sandy hook kids. one official says he doubts students will ever go to that sandy hook class again. john boehner is now offering to accept a tax increase but only on those making $1 million a year. boehner runs the risk of angering some in his party who are dead set any tax increase. other republicans say the gop

newtown will resume tomorrow with the exception of sandy hook elementary. back here in the bay area, a church is planning an interfaith service tonight just reflecting on what happened last week. it begins at 7:00 at first presbyterian at burlingame at 1500 easton drive. there will be local religious leaders and public officials there. it will include, prayers readings and hope. two of the youngest victims in the shooting will be laid to rest. coming up at 8:37, we'll get a live report from connecticut with how the people are dealing with a major part of the tragedy in their community. workers and volunteers in san jose are getting ready to give out free holiday meals to families in need. sacred heart community service will will begin handing out the food, starting at 9:00. today's event comes a few weeks after the organization fed a record number of families for

on that end there's about 40 carts loaded up with toys. you can see them of -- sol of them coming bay -- some of them coming by. they are getting ready to load them in a salvation army truck. if we look at the other end of the store, there's at least 20, 30 cartses with loaded with toys -- carts loaded with toys. if you turn outside, you can see the salvation army truckloading up. this a all organized by a san francisco nonprofit called dig deep sf. >> 1, 2, 3, go! [ cheers ] >> it was just around 7:20 this morning before the doors opened that the volunteers were off. dig deep sf raised $50,000 to buy toys for kids in need. they spent 10,000 at authorities authority and they just reached the $40,000 mark here at target. so they focus on shopping for older kids, ages 5 to 17. kids who are sometimes forgotten in these holiday toy

drives. among the shopping volunteers were some baseball players and nathan adrian, olympic gold medalist. >> just the thought of these kids getting -- getting -- getting gifts that they wouldn't have had. >> at first it started off looking for specific stuff and now i'm like a kid in a candy store. it's wild. i'm like oh, wow, i think i would enjoy that. >> reporter: it's founder the volunteers, as well -- it's fun for the volunteers as as well. there are volunteer -- as well. there are volunteers who feel strongly about this cause. if we take you back out here live. you can see a parade of carts this is what they shopped for. it took them 35 minutes to get all of this purchased. $30,000 spent at this target store and the organizers mentioned what helps them out a

on the peninsula getting there, 101 is pretty slow. want to show pittsburg. 24 is a mess from walnut creek to oakland. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. our system is moving through. some of the rain tas tape -- has tapered off. there is a thin, little rope there of heavy rain. there was some accumulating there not too long ago. some rain in the north, right around half moon bay and then over to redwood city. you can see some of that back to san mateo, millbrae, burlingame, san leandro, 880 coreydy then stretching back over to union city fremont. still kind of holding on there. in crockett, our observer says the rain has ended.

8:45. let's bring you up to date on some of the top stories we're following for you right now. san francisco police searching for three home invasion robbers. they tied up a family member -- family members and robbed them. this happened on sloat boulevard in the sunset district. no one was hurt. house speaker john boehner john boehner offering to except a tax hike on people make -- to accept a tax hike on people making more than a million dollars a year to help solve the fiscal cliff crisis. >> president obama wants that raised to those making $250,000. and two funerals will be held for two of those children killed in the shooting on friday. yesterday, president obama met with the victims' families and the first responders.

the president wants action to keep children safe. we have an update on breaking news out of ridgefield, connecticut. that's a town 20 miles south of newtown. a lockdown on ridgefield schools this morning has been lifted. the lockdown lasted for about two hours after reports of a suspicious person near the branchville train station seen carrying anitem that looked like a -- carrying an item that looked like a rifle. that's near a school i attended many years ago. police found no threat and students are returning back to class. well, the connecticut shooting has made bay area students fear for their own child's safety. tara moriarty is live in san francisco to tell us how school officials are taking precautions to make sure schools and the children are safe. tara? >> reporter: well, the perimeter around dr. williams' cobb elementary school, is pretty guarded. gates are extremely high. there is a sign asking visitors to check in.

there are even security cameras. but if an intruder wants to get in, it is questionable how far they could get. california superintendent expects new talks about metal detectors at schools as well as camera systems, fences and guards. he's alerted all 1100 public school districts to review safety plans. now, the archdiocese for catholic schools has not yet called for action but at this school in san francisco, password protected gates only open from the inside and lockdown drills are practiced regularly. >> besides teaching them we don't want anything to happen to them while they are under our eyes. we're constantly making sure our doors are locked. we ask for visitors to come in through the front door. they have to check in with the receptionist or the secretary or the principal, they are the only ones to open the door. we don't allow children to open the door for people. we try to minimize any chance of any strangers coming into the building and doing any harm. >> as important as security,

the superintendent says, awareness and training. that may have saved lives in connecticut. after columbine, earthquake and tornado drills were started. live in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. there is a $50,000 reward being offered for information in the case where an east bay man was killed in berkeley by a hit-and-run driver 15 years ago. rick dekek. he was running along 20th street when police stay a driver ran him down. the car is described as a late model '70s or eats 80s, light- colored cadillac with a dark top. deveke's brother is our colleague, randy. a vigil will be held tonight in san rafael for a woman killed four years ago. her body was found in a parking

lot behind the north street tavern in san -- on december 16th in 2008. she was last seen the night before leaving the teen evwith a man. the -- tavern with a man. the case has remained unsolved. 8:49. more police patrols along a popular hiking trail in alamo after a woman said she was raped. she said she was walking on the madrone trail wednesday afternoon. she said someone pulled here from behind. the man she said sexually assaulted her and then ran away. >> we've had additional patrols going on by hadn't earns and officers on the ground -- by helicopters and officers on the ground. >> that attacker is described as white, early 40s with short light, brown hair, about 5'10". he was also walking a brown and

white dog. lock your car in san mateo. police are issuing that warning after several recent break-ins. at least four car break-ins in san mateo since last weekend, windows were smashed to steal things left out in the open. all of the break-ins happened in the downtown area. in some parts of san francisco, it's getting cheaper to park. city transportation officials say sf park meters are part of the reason. the parking rates are adjusted based on demand and location. the rates have dropped and average of 14 cents an hour with some offering rates of less than $1 an hour. that's a lot -- a lot less than rates last year. this is the expected to be the busiest day of the year for mailing cards and packages. that's up almost 20% from last

year. there is a new survey out showing business economists expect u.s. growth to continue at its current slow rate through next year. this morning, the national association for business economics latest survey is forecasting a 2.1% rate of growth through 20134. this actual -- this is -- to 13. it's down/-- it's actually down 1/10. they forecast the housing recovery will continue and job creation will increase. nine minutes before 9:00. this afternoon, two nasa space probes are expected to end their year-long mission by crashing into the surface of the moon. the probe is called ebb and flow, they've been mapping the lunar sur -- lunar surface.

time know 8:54. oakland firefighters quickly put out a fire this morning. this one started about 7:40 this morning on warfield avenue in the grand lake area right here. it heavily damaged the top floor of that apartment building but everyone got out okay but four people were treated for smoke inhalation. this is all under investigation. firefighters had it under control by 8:00 this morning. 8:5. the 4th of july may never be the same in pacifica because the city is talking about banning fireworks. pacifica currently allows safe and sane fireworks and many people light them on the beach on independence day but they often don't clean up afterwards. so leftover debris gets carried over the ocean. the city council is creating a task force to look into the issue. san francisco's hockey team is heading to san jose to cheer

up fans who have not been able to see the sharks play because of the strike. tonight, the minor league san francisco bulls will play the stockton thunder at hp pavilion. more than 17,000 free tickets were given out to fans. the plan is to give sharks' fans and as and the businesses that -- and the businesses that rely on them something to cheer about. >> and later on today, several oakland raiders will take part in a toy dry at the southland mall in hayward. the players will be signing autographs in exchange for new, unwrapped toy donations, all to benefit toys for stotts -- tots. it starts at 6:00 tonight at the raiders image store. 1, 2, go, go! >> and santa had a bunch of helpers at a target in colma. they were picking out presents for bay area children in need.

this was organized by an organization called dig deep. these gifts will be given to the salvation army. faith be adrian was among the -- nathan adrian, the olympic gold medalist, was among the volunteers. let's check in with sal. how are things at the bay bridge toll plaza? >> it's really terrible. i just had an employee tell me, i need to get in the city. i said take your time. it will be at least an hour to get through. it's getting a little better. traffic is a little slow approaching cesar chavez and the 101 is slow off the bridge. rain moving through this morning. some of it right. some of it heavy. it looks like it's moving south, cloudy, mostly cloudy. but the cold air comes in tuesday, wednesday and rain sets up, and will take us all the way through the weekend.
